Why Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a

ballet about the Pilgrims?

The Pilgrims can be viewed as the cornerstone for the American Republic, and the Mayflower Compact as the precursor to the Declaration of Independence. Both were covenants which shaped the governing documents that followed: the By-Laws of the Pilgrims and the Articles of Confederation and Constitution.

Most importantly, and radically, the framers of both covenants looked to God as the author and overseer of their government, and originator of the rights which that government was formed to protect. The equality of all persons under God, and therefore under the Law, was based upon the unique relationship between God the Creator and those He created in his image, clearly delineated in the Bible. The civil government established by both the Pilgrims and the Founding Fathers was not modeled after Roman or Greek republics, nor defined by the State, but clearly looked to God the Creator as the only progenitor of “inalienable rights.”
