Some Thoughts on the Arts
Did you see the recent movie "A Great Awakening?" It's a historical drama about George Whitefield, famous revivalist from the First Great Awakening, and his friendship with Benjamin Franklin. I went to see it, almost apprehensively, because I'm passionate about revival and wondered whether they would "get it right." I expected a "Hollywoodized" version that would take too many liberties and over-contextualize the story for today's audiences.
My perspective shifted as soon as I saw from the opening credits that "Sight & Sound" was the creative force behind the film. The "Sight & Sound" theaters in Lancaster, PA and Branson, MO have exerted a powerful influence on generations of theatergoers, bringing Biblical and historically inspiring stories to life. I greatly respect and appreciate the work they do, which often reaches people who have never set foot in a church with stories of God's love and redemption.
Sure enough, "A Great Awakening" turned out to be the best "Christian" film I ever saw. It exhibits the highest production values and portrays one of our nation's most powerful spiritual stories both artistically and realistically. It inspired and spoke to my heart; I believe God's Spirit was at work.
Yesterday, as I reviewed video footage from one of our 2021 performances of "Anchored: The Pilgrim Story," my heart was stirred once again. FirstLoveWorks is not in the same league as "Sight & Sound": we don't have a theater, a team of employees, nor their incredible creative background and expertise. But we do have Ballet Magnificat, the nation's premier Christian ballet company, coming to New England to perform "Anchored: The Pilgrim Story," another true and deeply inspiring story about the Christian foundation of our nation.
We hope you will join us this September in Andover, Worcester, and Plymouth. Invite friends and family to come experience this dramatic portrayal of the faith and courage of the Pilgrims. We believe God's Spirit will move powerfully.
